As I type this I’m in the viewing gallery of my local swimming pool and its crossed my mind that, although I can watch, I cannot take pictures. Certain places and activities seem strangely out of bounds. The hysteria that surrounds children and now nursing mothers and their non sexual breasts, has created a climate of fear. Funerals are another common event where a camera is seen as an intrusion rather than a “dumb recorder”. The fear of overstepping these cultural norms and practice’s and the, mostly legal and celebrity driven, concerns over privacy keeps us from recording so many important aspects of our daily lives. Still I can see with my eyes but not cement them in time or place. Maybe one day this will change but I fear not in my lifetime.
